Călin Alexandru UR has been the director of Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics, Romania since 2020. He is also the associated professor at the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania. His fields of interest include experimental study of nuclear structure and nuclear reactions; high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy and particle spectroscopy; nuclear lifetimes measurements; mass spectrometry; data acquisition systems; gamma beam systems, etc., He is the co-author to more than 400 papers published in scientific journals indexed in ISI-Web of Science and to more than 140 papers published in conference proceedings books.

Optical The Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) is a multidisciplinary research center located at the National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering "Horia Hulubei" in Magurele, Romania. It has implemented a high power-laser system consisting of two arms, each of which can deliver 10 PW of peak power. The center operates as a user facility since 2022, accepting experiment proposals based on scientific merit. The proven laser irradiance of 10^23 W/cm^2 at the target position allows for the development of a rich and very ambitious research program. Topics of interest include the study of high-power laser - matter interaction to develop new particle acceleration mechanisms and intense photon sources, which will enable many applications.       One of the most promssing applications under study at ELI-NP, with significant societal implications, is the medical application in cancer treatment and diagnostics.       The presentation will provide an overview of the ELI-NP research center and of the most recent results.
